So before Robert Whittaker faces Yoel Romero for the interim middleweight title at UFC 213. Let’s check out his victory over Brad Tavares in 2015. Whittaker has been on a tear and the man from Australian is quickly becoming a fan favourite. The 185 lb middleweight fighter did suffer two losses since joining the UFC. But ever since then, ‘The Reaper’ now looks like one of the hottest prospects in the division.
He faces Tavares has a very similar record on paper. With Tavares already having lost to Romero in an earlier bout, this will be a litmus test for the Aussie. With the more seasoned veteran Brad Tavares entering the fight as the slight favourite. The former Australian rules footballer Robert Whittaker was on a mission to prove a point that he is a force to be reckoned with in the division. But Brad is also a fighter with something to prove as he tries to reclimb the middleweight rankings.
And as the fight gets started Tavares opens up with his trademark stinging leg kick, landing several times on Whittakers lead leg. Whittakers is probing with his left-hand jab, pushing back Tavares as he tries to land his own left hook. Missing with the first, Whittaker throws it again, catching and stunning the Hawaiian. Whittaker follows up again and lands the left clean, sending Tavares to the canvas. Where he jumps on to and swarms the American, knocking him out cold with a left-right combination.
The win signalled a big win for the relative newcomer who was out to make a statement and so he did. It’s onward and upward for the Australian who surely has a bright future ahead of him at middleweight. And with plenty of strong competition ahead of him, it’s sure to be an exciting time in the UFC 185 lb division.
