Mike Tyson vs Trevor Berbick Fight
Mike Tyson announces himself on the world heavyweight stage by knocking out the current WBC champion Trevor Berbick. In a scene which was to become synonymous with the man from Brownsville Brooklyn, New York.
In a fight, some thought was too soon for the 20-year-old. Tyson showed poise and maturity which some commentators had never seen. Known for bull-rushing and crushing his opponents. Iron Mike took his time, stayed relaxed, and broke down the champion. Over the first two rounds of their scheduled 12 round fight.
Early in the first, Tyson landed a number of stiff shots. Until he eventually rocked the champion toward the end of the round. Berbick returning to his corner looked to already be on shaky legs. While the young Tyson looked cool calm, listening intently to his corner. Berbick’s corner appeared rattled and worked frantically to get their man back in the action.
Tyson Landed Some Significant Shots
Round 2 started very much as round 1 had ended. Tyson landed some significant shots, while barely missing a number of uppercuts which could have ended the fight then and there. It wasn’t until the final minute of the round at which point Tyson landed a short stiff left hook. Which at closer inspection appeared to only graze the champion, yet was enough to completely concuss.
Berbick went down and struggled several times to climb to his feet before the fight was called off. And the new era of world heavyweight dominance with Iron Mike Tyson was born. At only 20 years and 4 months, Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. Commenting in his post-fight interview that,
“Every punch I threw had bad intentions”
There was no doubting the knockout power of this ferocious fighter. And with his win over Berbick, Iron Mike Tyson set in play a 4 year, 10 fight series of title defences and new titles wins. Which would see him become one of the most feared heavyweight champions to ever walk the planet.
