Ernesto Hoost A Brendan Dorman Film Study
Mr. Perfect, Ernesto Hoost Hoost is a 4-time K1 champion, considered to be one of the greatest kickboxers of all time. While his parents were from Suriname, Ernesto was born and raised in Holland. In 1993, he made his world-stage debut at the K-1 World Grand Prix, where he came just one win short of the world title.
“Mr. Low-Kick” is a name Ernesto (pronounced like host) Hoost doesn’t like “because it’s not all (he) can do”, but recognizes “it was a very important, effective part of (his) game”. Also, since we keep it real, he and I both know he’s likely the best low-kicker that’s ever competed in K1, and someone excellent to study for all combat sports athletes and coaches alike.
Some of the best advice I ever got from him, or anyone as it translates to other things, is to “never throw the low kick in the same moment, you must always keep switching the moment”. If it’s lost in translation, he is referencing the cadence and / or timing of the strike. As a musician and friend of Duke Roufus, I’d be doing everyone a disservice to not properly address cadence and dynamics in my breakdowns.
Now like so many of the greats in combat sports, he has turned to coaching, so in his honor I’m going to give some of you a peek into what his notable students like Tyrone Spong, Pat Barry, Fedor Emelianenko, and Joanna Jędrzejczyk already know by showing you more than just his perfect low-kick, but the arsenal of counters and ringcraft of “Mr. Perfect”.
I’d also be a let-down and a copy cat if I only covered his low kick as there is much more to a true pioneer in Combat Sports, and arguably the greatest kickboxer in history. Without further ado.
