P4P Power King Artur Beterbiev || Breakdown • Film Study • Highlights Hardest Puncher in Boxing
With the pipe dream of GSP vs. Khabib floating across the globe, I find Georges friendship with Dagestani born “King Artur”, known for his exceptional punching power, having won all of his professional fights by knockout or stoppage, interesting if nothing else.
Of course upon my rabbit hole – film-watching – trips I see a boxer with outrageous power at Light Heavyweight, with the numbers (15-0 w/ 15 finishes) to back it up. Though his power is exceptional, perhaps a better word may be unique? Beterbiev creates wicked power on a frame that resembles Khabib (long torso, shorter limbs) more than say Deontay Wilder and can create his power in very short space. Often times he does his best work via in-fighting due to excellent use of framing, clinching technique(s) and the aforementioned power.
Short Power, not Short Punching
Short power, not to be confused with short punching (in this case especially, eg short punching is usually about trajectory and speed), is the ability to create power without much “wind up” or distance the punching hand has travelled. Tyson some may use as an example of short power, but he also had explosive, fast-twitch muscle in abundance and it was very clear in his movement.
“King” Artur’s punching power looks more like he is literally heavy-handed. His pressure-based, granite chinned decimation of all 15 of his professional opponents (as an amateur, Beterbiev won a silver medal in 2007, gold at the 2009 World Championships, as well as gold at the 2006 and 2010 European Championships) has many an eye on his skill set, yet very few explaining it properly.
This is a study on the tactics that lead to a high finishing rate in spite of frame and genetics, rather than as the result of them. Enjoy, cheers.
