Alex Pereira || Unique Striking || A Brendan Dorman Film Study

Alex ‘Po Atan’ Pereira Breakdown

NARRATED: After watching Alex ‘Po Atan’ Pereira vs. Donegi Abena I was conflicted for a few reasons, but mostly impressed with the efficacy of Pereira despite a very unconventional approach to ‘ye ole’ K1 like kickboxing. The indigenous Brazilians 6’4″ frame and 80″ reach are part of what I believe developed his style, and some allusions have been made to Capoeira, but I’ve seen no evidence of it.

My dichotomous, two-fold conflict is probably irrelevant but I try to be forward with my people in any / all settings. For starters, despite becoming a stranger with success (as has his team which is odd eh? This is why I’m loyal to SOME..), Israel Adesanya aka Stylebender was someone I used to speak with regularly, and someone I would consider a friend.

He has lost to Pereira twice and I don’t want that to be the focus of this, it’s not at all. If somehow you thought I needed that kind of attention, you can look at many old interviews discussing (Israel on The Luke Thomas show, Twitter, IG) Alex, as well as fan requests for a breakdown.

The real reason I started to make this, however, was, like most times I randomly do this, an interesting technique that I’m not sure what to call really. The debate or the tail of the dichotomy is this forever issue I have with trying to politely explain to people that Bruce Lee was a fantastic fight philosopher and physical actor. I don’t know what Jean Claude Van Damme is saying, ever, but so was he. They’re actors (in fact one has more fighting experience), fighters fight.

While researching the topic amidst this rabbit hole of a dig, I’d get search results such as: Q.

*Did Bruce Lee do kickboxing?* (auto-generated).

A. Bruce Lee used to perform thousands of punches and kicks every day. Although he did a lot of bodybuilding later in his life, the core of his conditioning was from kung-fu/kickboxing workouts. Follow his footsteps to develop superior strength, speed and power.
My take: No. He did not.

If your girlfriend does cardio-kickboxing is she now a kickboxer? Can we just stop with the nonsense, please? There was a time I’d go further, but the closest thing to the kick in question (though I’ll cover a few other interesting technical things) would be a Chasse Bas (low hunting).

(I’ve provided enough source material, that’s what it’s called) aka Oblique kick, which people think Bruce Lee invented, and if not that Joe Rogan invented the name for Jon Jones invention. None of that is true, and the kick has been a staple of Savate since the 1924 Summer Olympics. Onward we go…..

PS There have been Vale Tudo fights going back to before Bruce Lee’s life aka far prior to ‘MMA’. Let this be a lesson in life not just martial arts, you’ve been lied to a lot by “experts”, just like me.
